Itinerary

Day 1 UK to Porto

Fly to Porto, beautifully located on the banks of the Douro River and famous for giving its name to the iconic port wine. Upon arrival transfer to your Nicko Cruises ship and after time to settle into your cabin, meet your travelling companions over a welcome drink prior to dinner onboard. Meals included: D

Day 2 Porto - Caldas de Aregos

After breakfast on board, enjoy a city tour of Porto. Starting with a drive through the narrow streets to see its 16th century arcaded buildings and Baroque churches and chapels we then cross Gustav Eiffel's iconic 19th century iron bridge to reach the cathedral atop Penaventosa hill, which boasts some amazing views across the city. This tour ends with a visit to a typical port wine cellar for an opportunity to see some casks full of port and to taste a sample of the world famous Portuguese tipple. Return to the cruise for lunch and sail to Caldas de Aregos, arriving this evening. Meals included: B,L,D

Day 3 Caldas de Aregos - Pinhão

This morning arrive into the picturesque little town of Pinhão situated on a particularly scenic bend on the River Douro, deep in the heart of one of Portugal's most established port wine growing regions. This afternoon visit Mateus Palace, a fine example of baroque architecture, with an impressive facade made up of beautiful pinnacles before returning to the ship. Meals included: B,L,D

Day 4 Pinhão - Barca d'Alva

Enjoy a leisurely morning whilst sailing to Barca d'Alva. On arrival, enjoy an excursion to Castelo Rodrigo one of Portugal's twelve historical parishes and home to a castellated medieval village from which it derives its name. Meals included: B,L,D

Day 5 Barca d'Alva - Pocinho

A day at leisure to enjoy the facilities of your cruise or to wander around Barca d'Alva, the last Portuguese village along the Douro, close to the Spanish border and overlooked by mountains. Alternatively you could take the optional excursion to the Spanish city of Salamanca including lunch, (book and pay onboard the cruise). Meals included: B,L,D

Day 6 Pocinho - Regua

A leisurely morning before arriving early this afternoon into Regua. This afternoon a visit to the warm and charming town of Lamego, rich in history and home to one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Portugal - The Sanctuary of our Lady of Remedies. The Sanctuary is a stunning baroque church built in the 18th century ,over the remains of a 14th century chapel. There will also be a visit to the Gothic Cathedral and town's museum. Return to the cruise for dinner this evening. Meals included: B,L,D

Day 7 Regua - Porto

Enjoy a day at leisure cruising back to Porto where you will arrive in the early afternoon. Meals included: B,L,D

Day 8 Porto - UK

After breakfast disembark from the cruise and transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Meals included: B

Nicko River Cruise - Douro Queen

The Douro Queen has a spacious sun deck with a swimming pool, comfortable loungers and tables and chairs run the length of the ship. Sit back with a cocktail in the panorama salon and bar, and enjoy international cuisine and traditional Portuguese delicacies in the charming restaurant. The modern cabins have individually controlled air-conditioning/heating, private facilities, satellite TV, hairdryer and safe, and are approx. 15 sqm in size. Cabins on the main deck have large, non-opening windows. (Main deck aft cabins are approx. 14 m² in size). Your holiday price is based on a main deck cabin. Cabin upgrades are available, please call and speak to one of our Holiday Advisors.

Average group size of our tours

Our holiday group sizes do vary from tour to tour - but we have an average group size of 26. Big or small, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to socialise with your fellow travellers. So, whether you fancy making friends at mealtimes or feel like being friendly by the pool, you’re guaranteed a great time whatever size your group is.

Deposit information

When you book a holiday, you will be asked to pay a deposit, this will be made clear at the time of booking. In most cases we will charge the following deposit amount;

  • UK Holidays - £150 per person
  • European Holidays - £200 Per person
  • Worldwide Holidays - £250 or 10% whichever is the greater

On some holidays we may charge a slightly higher deposit, to cover any costs we have to pay immediately to secure your booking with our suppliers. This will be made clear at the time of booking.

If you choose a tour that is within 84 days of departure you will need to pay the full balance when you book.

Our cancellation policy

If you decide to cancel your confirmed booking you must notify us (or your travel agent) in writing, as soon as possible. Since we incur costs in cancelling your arrangements, you will have to pay the applicable cancellation charges up to the maximum shown below.

  • More than 75 days before departure - Loss of deposit only
  • 43 - 74 days - 50% of tour price
  • 29 - 42 days - 75% of tour price
  • 15 - 28 days - 90% of tour price
  • Day of Departure - 14 days - 100% of tour price

It is important to remember that passport, visa and health requirements can change before departure; therefore, we recommend you regularly familiarise yourself with the latest requirements before you travel. For some destinations, it is not always discernable that a visa is required for entry at the border.  For example, for some customers, to travel to the United States, an ESTA may be required. For Canada, an ETA and to India, an e-visa may be needed. Please do check your requirements to avoid any unnecessary cost and delays.
